Inspired once again by my friend Lynn, I have started a sketchbook of skies. They are not really big, in fact each sky is only 9cm square. I wrote a few of the lyrics from ‘Big Sky’ by Kate Bush in the front cover, as it seemed like the right thing to set my sketchbook up. Laurie cut me a template, so that I could position the squares on each page easily.
My sqaure borders have given me an area to work in, but I quickly found that I was straying out of them. This is partially due to the nature of working with watercolours and also me.
For the most part, the skies reflect the weather from that day. Some, usually because I’m painting in the evening, are done from my photos. One or two are complete experiments.
I had intended to do one a day, but it’s usually two, completing a double page spread. I started on the 14th July and already have forty little ‘big skies’.
Here are a few.
As a way of experimenting and exploring techniques, I am really enjoying this sketchbook. I am also pondering what other themes I could use, trees, rocks and stones, leaves, flowers, close ups…
You have beautifully captured some stunning skies Vicky!
Thank you and thanks for the idea. I completed the whole sketchbook before Christmas. I’ve just prepared another.
These are gorgeous! I have too many ongoing sketchbooks (one for mushrooming, one for birding, a general one, two mixing sketchbooks, etc) or I would love to start a sky studies sketchbook also. Well, maybe I can add one more… 😀
Thank you so much. I really enjoy having ‘themed’ sketchbooks alongside general ones. You can never have too many. They’ll all get filled…eventually 🙂
I love all of these! x
Thank you Heidi 🙂
I’m toying with ideas for similar sketchbooks. I’m thinking of doing ‘seeds’, ‘weeds’ or both together. I’m also intrigued by old doors at the moment. I just need more time!
